This tutorial gives an overview of CIGRE activities to further define test methods for the evaluation of polymeric insulating materials under high-voltage outdoor conditions.
Dynamic hydrophobic properties (retention, recovery, transfer) as well as tracking and erosion resistance are essential surface properties of polymeric insulating materials for high-voltage outdoor applications.
Recently, test methods for evaluation of the hydrophobicity transfer including minimum criteria have been introduced into IEC standardisation, while test methods for the evaluation of the hydrophobicity retention are not yet standardised.
This tutorial presents work on the development of a test method for evaluating hydrophobicity retention under AC stress: the outputs are being standardised by the IEC.
However, currently there is no equivalent test methods for evaluating the tracking and erosion resistance under DC stress.
This tutorial will also address the challenges and opportunities for establishing a DC tracking and erosion test method and gives an outlook on further scheduled work.
