This workshop will introduce CIGRE JWG B4/B1/C4.73 work on surges and extended overvoltages in HVDC cable systems.
It provides an overview of how temporary overvoltage (TOV) shapes are identified and characterized in different MMC-HVDC transmission system configurations using simulation.
The tutorial will also highlight why this work matters, including its contribution to the TOV test described in CIGRE TB 852, and outlines the practical testing perspective by addressing key questions about industry need, suitable test representation, and available technical methods.
