Sub Session 1: Grid Forming Converter Technologies (B4)
Abstract: Part 1 of Grid forming workshop, organized by SC B4, covers emerging grid-forming (GFM) converter technologies for transmission systems, highlighting converter-based solutions that enhance stability in weak and low-inertia grids. Topics include the first E-STATCOM installation integrating supercapacitor storage to deliver fast inertial and voltage support, operational benefits observed during grid events, and lessons from GFM HVDC schemes that reveal the need for coherent, non-conflicting grid-code requirements. The program reviews advantages and limits of GFM converters under large disturbances, and demonstrates GFM functions—self-synchronization, inertial response, and voltage support—in a 525 kV, 2 GW VSC-HVDC project. Testing and deployment pathways for GFM BESS are also discussed.

Sub Session 2: Power System Perspective for Integration of Grid Forming Capabilities. Chaired by Dr Julia Matevosyan (C4)
Abstract: The second part of the workshop, organized by SC C4, will bring together perspectives from research organizations, TSOs, and system operators to discuss when and why GFM capabilities become necessary, the extent to which advanced grid-following technologies can support the transition, evolving technical requirements under development such as ENTSO-E RfG 2.0, and operational experience with GFM deployment. The workshop will also provide a global overview of emerging GFM requirements, incentives, demonstration projects, and future implementation plans, helping frame the evolving role of GFM technologies in maintaining system stability, resilience, and operational flexibility in future power systems dominated by inverter-based based resources.
