System Integrity Protection Schemes (SIPS) are increasingly implemented in power systems around the world, with the dual aim to counteract propagation of severe disturbances and to facilitate secure provision of increased grid utilization.
The CIGRE Joint Working Group C2/B5.46 “System Integrity Protection Schemes and the (N-1) criterion” explores how SIPS are used around the globe through knowledge sharing and providing lessons learned.
With the overarching goal to enable an efficient use of SIPS as one piece of the puzzle in how to best meet the challenges when developing the future sustainable electricity system.
At this tutorial, we will present a broad view on the use of SIPS to provide added reliability and transfer capacity in power systems around the globe:
- South Australia – novel hybrid SIPS solution
- Norway – large scale SIPS for transmission grid capacity
- Spain – distributed resources for system wide SIPS
- Brazil – SIPS to mitigate impact of extreme events
