BESS are key enablers for the implementation of active distribution system functions by providing a range of grid services at the distribution level. This tutorial describes these grid support services, distributed BESS aggregation approaches, BESS operating constraints in terms of battery technology, weight, maintenance, and coordination with other controllers and regulatory and legal frameworks for BESS grid service delivery, regulatory and market considerations.
